LAS VEGAS (AP) - A Nevada judge has set a May 13 date for hearings in football star O.J. Simpson's bid to prove he was so badly represented by lawyers in his Las Vegas armed robbery and kidnapping case that he should get a new trial.

Appeals attorneys say they expect Simpson will testify for the first time in the case.

Simpson wasn't in the courtroom for Friday's date-setting conference. He's serving nine to 33 years in state prison for the 2008 conviction of robbing two sports memorabilia dealers in a Las Vegas casino hotel room.

Simpson maintained he was retrieving personal items that had been stolen from him.
