As the weather gets warmer, more people will be heading to the beach and the Marine Mammal center is urging you not to touch seal pups. The center's slogan is "Leave Seals Be." People are encouraged to stay 50-feet away from seal pups.
Lisa Harper-Henderson is the Marine Mammal Center site manager for San Luis Obispo County and she says. "In most cases the public is well intentioned and they believe the pup has been abandoned which is not the case. The worst thing that can be done is have someone pick up this pup, remove them from the beach. They need to be with their mom. They need to have that mother's milk so that they will be able to build up antibodies."
Henderson says that mother seals will often forge for food underwater, leaving their pup all alone. If people are around the pup the mother won't return to it.
The local 24-hour response line for the Marine Mammal Center is 771-8300
