Cal Poly head coach Larry Lee will send Matt Imhof to the mound to start Friday nights opener at home against 21st ranked Kansas State. If a save situation arises, Reid Reilly will be called on to close the door. The two juniors being the leaders of the rotation and bullpen has been known for a long time.
Imhof pitched for USA Baseball's Collegiate National Team during the offseason and was named to the Louisville Slugger NCAA Division I Preseason All-American second team. Reilly is among 50 pitchers named to the initial watch list for the 10th annual National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year Award, given to the top relief pitcher in NCAA Division I.
On Monday, Lee told KSBY what the rest of his starting lineup will likely look like on Friday.
Catcher: SR, Chris Hoo. Bats=Right handed
1st Base: SO John Schuknecht. Bats=Right
2nd Base: SO, Mark Mathias. Bats=Right
Shortstop: SO, Peter Van Gansen. Bats=Left
3rd Base: SR, Jimmy Allen. Bats=Right
Right Field: JR, Nick Torres. Bats=Right
Center Field: JR, Jordan Ellis. Bats=Left
Left Field: SR, Tim Wise. Bats-Right
Designated Hitter: SO Brian Mundell. Bats=Right
All nine batters in the lineup were on the team last year. Coach Lee says he doesn't expect to play much, "small ball." He doesn't think it's smart for his team to give away outs with bunts because of how much power and how little speed they have.
First pitch on Friday at Baggett Stadium is set for 6:00pm. The Mustangs are on the verge of the top 25 of most national polls and a 2-1 or 3-0 series might get them there by next week.
