Fourteen shutout innings from Courtney Cuzick are a big reason why the Nipomo softball team is off to a 3-0 start. The senior continues to dominate hitters in her fourth season playing varsity. "I'm just ready to go after every batter. Always into the game and thinking about what's coming and what to do at that moment and adjusting to whatever needs to happen" said Cuzick who has posted a sub 0.80 ERA the past two seasons.

Cuzick is a strikeout machine, in 450 high school innings she's struck out 728 batters. "She really is able to sense hitters weaknesses and go after those weaknesses and attack hitters. Whether it's keeping them off balance or overpowering them. She really is good at analyzing hitters" said Nipomo head coach Matt Paradis.

Cuzick has already committed to play next season at the University of Pennsylvania, a successful division one school in the Ivy League. Cuzick says the school in Philadelphia has always been her top choice. "I've been looking at Penn for a while, pretty much since like my freshman year and so when I finally got the opportunity to play there it was kind of a no brainer. They have the perfect combination of athletics and academics for me" said Cuzick.

Athletics and academics, two things Cuzick excels at, just ask Paridis who is also one of her teachers. "When you see Courtney out in the circle she's an incredibly intelectual pitcher. Very, very cerebral and that very much is the way she is in the classroom. She's an incredibly high performer" said Paradis

With her college decision out of the way, Cusick's focus is on winning a CIF championship. Nipomo High School has never done that, in any sport. "We're definitely shooting for that CIF championship this year, we made it to the semifinals last year and lost a heartbreaker" said Cuzick.

The Titans also won their first ever Los Padres League title last year. Nipomo plays in a three day tournament in Bakersfield starting on Thursday.
