Tyler Baty will end his football career at Mission Prep with some impressive statistics but he'll also leave with an impressive record. The senior quarterback has led the Royals to an 8-0 season heading into Friday's final regular season game against 9-0 Bishop Diego. Both teams are ranked number one in their divisions. The game at Mission Prep is the KSBY game of the week.
"We just keep getting better and I think the numbers kind of show that things are clicking and things are working and it shows the growth of our team through the last three years." said Baty who is in his third season as the Royals starting quarterback. Baty is completing 65 percent of his passes and averaging 240 yards passing per game. The 6'0" pocket passer has thrown 29 touchdowns compared to just three interceptions.
"He comes out and does his job every time. At the beginning of the game, he's always the one to make that big play to set the tempo for the game" said senior running back Mike Cardwell.
Baty's head coach Chad Henry played quarterback at Cal Poly and has been an important influence.
"He's taught me a lot and he's really one of the biggest reasons I've been able to keep getting better through these three years is because of him and all of his knowledge."
Henry says Baty has earned his success with hard work. Henry has gone to five quarterback camps with Baty during the off season and worked diligently with him on his footwork and film study.
"I think at this moment, as a senior Tyler's probably a little sick of me but at the same time I'm going to miss him a lot when he's gone and I'm sure he's going to miss what we've been doing" said Henry.
Mission Prep and Bishop Diego are in different divisions but the teams are both in Section IV. That means they are competing against each other for a berth in a state bowl game.
Kickoff is set for 7:30 pm on Friday.
