Last year's pumpkin crop nationwide ( 2008 ) was down quite a bit from the usual supply due to weather related issues. In some places it was too much rain, while in other areas it was not enough. That translated into less pumpkins being available for companies who make the canned pumpkin filling that's used in making the pies.
Some companies like Libby's have rushed some of the 2009 pumpkin crop to the canning process in order to try and help ease the shortage of canned pumpkin filling.
Still, if you're having trouble finding pumpkin pie filling on the store shelves right now, you can blame it on the weather....Perhaps this Thanksgiving, apple pie will be more popular than pumpkin pie!
