Some uses of sky lanterns will soon be prohibited in Los Osos.
The Los Osos Board of Directors passed an ordinance Thursday prohibiting the lighting and launching of sky lanterns, also known as Chinese lanterns, in the District.
CAL FIRE says the ordinance recognizes sky lanterns are used at times for religious or cultural reasons, and exceptions to the ordinance may be allowed with approval from CAL FIRE.
Violators of the ordinance, which goes into effect in 30 days, may be liable for fire suppression costs or issued a misdemeanor ticket.
