Lizard, rodent business investigated for neglect

LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. (AP) - Officials in Lake Elsinore say a large reptile and rodent breeding business is under investigation for animal neglect after dead animals, stench and filth were uncovered in an inspection.

City Manager Grant Yates tells the Riverside Press-Enterprise (http://bit.ly/SmaJEn) Thursday that the business - Global Captive Breeders' facility - was a mess when animal control and code enforcement officers visited a day earlier.

The visit to the 6,100-square-foot facility came in response to complaints by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

It's unclear how many dead or sick animals were found.

Yates says the business had proper permits to deal in exotic snakes, reptiles and rodents.

On Thursday afternoon, officers were still inspecting the property in protective suits and masks.

Press-Enterprise efforts to reach the business owners were unsuccessful.
