Local 49ers, Chargers fans buying team gear after successful NFL playoff games

It's an exciting day for California football teams. The San Francisco 49ers and the San Diego Chargers are both in the NFL playoffs, which means fans throughout the state are going wild. One local sports store said on Monday that sales on 49ers and Chargers gear have spiked since Sunday's wins.

"it's a busy time now just because of playoffs. We get a lot of people buying off playoffs stuff," said Cooper Prentis, the manager of The Sports Forum in downtown San Luis Obispo.

Prentis said Sunday's games of the 49ers versus the Green Bay Packers, and the Chargers against the Cincinnati Bengals were so popular, excitement could be heard down the street of the store.

Prentis said, "Just downtown, you could hear people at the bars, everyone yells, had a couple people early in the morning, they bought the gear, then after the game they won, you see more people coming in like, 'Oh I gotta get my team!'"

He said the two NFL teams that are hot sellers right now are the California teams.

"I'd say the Kaepernick jerseys, those are the best selling. I think throughout the whole season, the NFL season, Kaepernick was the highest selling jersey," said Prentis.

Prentis said they didn't have a lot of Chargers gear in stock on Sunday, but what they do have, fans are buying.

He said, "I mean because it wasn't even until about a week ago, we weren't even sure the Chargers were gonna make it into the playoffs. So, I mean, we do carry a couple of shirts."

Prentis said having two California teams in the playoffs is great for business, no matter who wins.

"(On a) personal level, I'd like to see the, I'd like to see the Chargers go," referring to the Super Bowl, said Prentis.

The last time two California teams made it this far in the playoffs was 2003. The 49ers and the Raiders both made it to the second round that year. 1995 was the last time the 49ers and the Chargers both made it to this point. The Niners beat the Chargers in the Super Bowl that season.

The 49ers will be on the road when they take on the Carolina Panthers, and the Chargers will play the Broncos in Denver. Both games are on Sunday.
