Water agencies across Santa Barbara County are observing May as Water Awareness Month.
They say the purpose of the month is to educate Californians on water issues. It also encourages residents to be more wise about the amount of water they use each day. The ultimate goal of the campaign is to develop and awareness about water conservation.
Santa Maria City residents may receive a water conservation packet in the mail this month, along with other promotional items like toilet tank banks and shower timers.
Santa Maria City Officials are also making sure to educate area youth. The City Utilities Department held its first Water Awareness School Poster Contest for third-grade students from the Santa Maria-Bonita School District. Kids were invited to create posters about water conservation. Those posters are now on display at the Santa Maria City Hall.
