A few Central Coast high school teams were honored prior to the Los Angeles Angels home game on Tuesday against the visiting Minnesota Twins. They were recognized for their work in the classroom as the CIF Southern Section Academic Award winners.
The St. Joseph girls cross country team had the best GPA for schools 1500 and less. The Knights had a 3.84 GPA. Coach Louis Escobar and junior Bridget Adam are included in the picture taken during the pregame ceremony.
The Atascadero girls water polo team had the best GPA in southern California for schools with more than 1500 students. The Greyhounds posted a 3.74 mark.
The Atascadero girls volleyball team also won the academic award with team GPA of 3.76.
The Santa Ynez baseball team posted the best mark for schools with enrollment under 1500. The Pirates combined for a 3.62 GPA.
The team awards, based on a cumulative grade point average, were awarded in 22 sports. Schools are divided into two enrollment categories: enrollment of more than1500 or less than 1500.
The first place teams receive a banner to commemorate their achievement.
