We lost an American icon today. "Davy Crockett" star and Central Coast vintner Fess Parker died today.
A family spokesperson says he passed away at ten this morning of natural causes at his home in Santa Ynez. He was 85. While fess parker is best known for his work in television and movies, he's also made an impact here on the local community.
In the 1950s, Parker launched his career as an actor starring as Walt Disney's Davy Crockett. His successful television career continued in the 1960s as Daniel Boone. In 1989, Parker turned his attention to fine wine. That's when he opened the Fess Parker Winery in Los Olivos.
The winery is 750 acres and has produced prize-winning wines. Parker's death also falls on his wife Marcella's 84th birthday. They were married for 50 years. He leaves behind two children, eleven grand-children and one great-grandchild.
The president and C.E.O of the Walt Disney company released this statement about Parker's death.
"Like many kids growing up in the 50's, Davy Crockett was my first hero, and I had the coonskin cap to prove it. Fess is truly a Disney legend, as is the heroic character he portrayed, and while he will certainly be missed, he will never be forgotten."
