Local counties fared well in a new study that ranks the overall health of nearly every county in the United States. The rankings are broken down by state. There are two main categories: health outcomes and health factors.
Health outcomes are based on length and quality of life. In that category, San Luis Obispo County ranked 13 out of 56 California counties. Santa Barbara County ranked 18.
Health factors include behaviors, like smoking and drinking, along with social and economic factors and physical environment. San Luis Obispo County is ranked 6 for health factors out of all 56 California counties. Santa Barbara county came in at 13.
Marin County is the healthiest county in the state for the second straight year. Others near the top of the lists include San Benito, Placer, Santa Clara, and San Mateo counties. The unhealthiest California counties include Del Norte, Tulare, Trinity, and Kern Counties.
The second-annual report, conducted by the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, is billed as the most comprehensive study of its kind.
