Dr. Rupert Chowins and surgery technician Eric White of San Luis Obispo-based Pacific Eye have returned from their medical mission to Guatemala.
They used Hospital de la Familia's clinic to perform 178 surgeries and hold more than 480 consultations in a remote town. The majority of surgeries performed were to remove cataracts. They also performed eye muscle surgeries for patients who see double and corrective surgeries for children with crossed eyes.
"I came home with a refreshed attitude on my profession," White said, "Everyone should get involved in something like this to realize why they do what they do."
White and Dr. Chowins plan to return to Guatemala next year.
