Local drive-in gets national recognition

It's been a classic American attraction in San Luis Obispo for more than 60 years and the Sunset Drive-in Movie Theater is getting national recognition.

Trip Advisor has named the theater in its top 10 for drive-in movie theaters across all of the United States, and the only one in California.

Big recognition for this small and still family-owned operation.

"The drive-in is great. You get a car load, it's real convenient, we all get in, we get to cuddle, it's nice, it's really nice," says Michael Lacy, who was at the drive-in Thursday night.

Seeing a movie at the drive-in has become a family tradition years in the making for the Lacy family. "We are going to watch 'Planes 2' and 'Maleficent'," says Allison Lacy, who was also at the drive-in Thursday night.

For the Lacy family - outside is better than inside. "Outside, sitting in the car... it's better and you can see better," she adds.

Trip Advisor ranked the theaters based on a popularity index, taking into consideration the quality and quantity of the most recent reviews on its website.

Big recognition in what could be called a dwindling industry. Nearly 4,000 drive-in theaters could be counted in the U.S. in the 1950s - now, a mere 357 remain.

So, for now, this nationally-recognized drive-in will continue to create fun Americana memories for many generations to come.

The top spot went to Skyway Drive-in Theatre in Fish Creek, WI.

You can catch a double feature for just $8 for adults and $3 for kids ages 5-11 at Sunset Drive-in.
