It's Valentine's Day, and for some people there's no better way than to celebrate than with flowers. They show up by the dozens at work, at home, just about everywhere.
Have you ever wondered what those flower shops go through on days like today? In Santa Maria, one couple spent the day making sure those flowers got to your loved ones.
Phones were ringing off the hook Tuesday afternoon at Rose of Sharon on East Main Street. "Today becomes very difficult because people have forgotten," said Ron Rose, who owns the floral shop with his wife, Mia.
For today, this craziness is normal. "There are hundreds of orders today," added Rose.
In fact, preparation began a couple of days before the holiday. There was extra help on hand Tuesday to make sure all those flowers got delivered. "I delivered to the resident care and this older woman was sleeping and they woke her up to get her flowers. It was just touching, and she was so happy to get them," said Royann Garges of Arroyo Grande.
There was also extra help to those customers who did their shopping a little late. "Last minute all the time. It's the best way to go," said Victor Zamutio of Guadalupe.
For one man, buying flowers during the early afternoon on Valentine's Day wasn't last minute. "I actually planned it normally, a lot sooner but Valentine's this year kind of snuck on me," said Roger Culbertson of Santa Maria.
Well, ladies, don't we hear that a lot?
"I had to get a flower shop to make sure I didn't miss that," joked Rose.
Ron and Mia Rose (yes, that's really their last name) have spent every Valentine's Day arranging flowers at their shop; and they enjoy every second.
But not everything that's ordered is romantic. "Some guys do have a couple of girlfriends at a time," added Rose.
The husband and wife team opened their shop in 1982. But still working around the clock on the most romantic holiday on the calender with your wife isn't so bad. "And still on the weekends i only want to spend my time with her," said Rose.
