Two local high school students are now at the top of their class when it comes to agriculture.
The winners were announced last week for the 2012-2013 state officers for the Future Farmers of America, or FFA.
Leah Gibson from Paso Robles High School was named FFA Vice President, and Tyler Menane from Nipomo High School was elected FFA Reporter. Six people total make up the 2012-2013 team, which also includes a president, secretary, treasurer and sentinel.
FFA is a club of sorts for students who intend to pursue a career in agriculture. But the newly elected high school seniors won't be diving into college just yet. All six officers will spend the next year living at the State FFA Center in Galt, California. They'll travel throughout the state putting on leadership conferences, going on industry tours, visiting high schools and meeting legislators.
More than 50 students applied to be officers this year, and the election process is a tough one. Students are required to submit an essay and letters of recommendation, then take tests about agriculture and FFA, including a writing sample and round robin interviews. In addition, students must assemble a presentation to give in front of a mock school board, then must answer questions in front of an audience of more than 4,000 people. After four days of interviews, 12 finalists were selected. Candidates then gave speeches, delegates voted and six officers were elected.
The officers represent more than 70,000 FFA members at more than 300 high schools in California.
