KSBY was sent an e-mail today, along with attached photos concerning what appeared to be a starving and neglected horse. It was seen in the vicinity of Santa Lucia and Portola Roads in Atascadero.
We weren't able to locate the horse, but we have found out that it appears to be a growing problem.
The person who emailed these photos of what appears to be a severely malnourished horse says they were taken about a week ago in Atascadero.
According to the email, authorities have been notified, but haven't responded.
The "Heaven Can Wait" equine sanctuary tells us cases like this have become all too common.
"This is a very large problem right now. In fact, horses are one of the most seriously neglected animals we have right now", said Ramey Zamora with the Heaven Can Wait Equine Sanctuary.
While most horses are well cared for, they say the troubled economy has made it hard for a growing number of people to feed their animals, but help is available.
"I'd start calling places like horse rescues and equine rescues in the area. Many of them, if they can't take the animals themselves do have listings of people who have volunteered to foster horses for a while," Zamora said.
County Animal Services wouldn't comment on this specific case, but told us people often mistake neglected horses for old ones. They do encourage you to call if you suspect an animal is being mistreated.
The Heaven Can Wait Equine Sanctuary also encourages horse owners to ask for help when needed. "We're very willing and able to help you do this...We'll be glad to do that," said Zamora.
