On Monday, December 7, Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center in San Luis Obispo will celebrate its 50th Anniversary of Service. This weekend the public is invited to attend a birthday celebration.
In 1959, the hospital opened with 53 beds at a cost of about $500,000.
50 years later, it now has 164 beds and a $65 million payroll. According to staff, the hospital also has exclusive services in neurosurgery, high risk pregnancy, and the only Newborn Intensive Care Unit between Santa Barbara and Salinas.
The public is invited to attend a birthday celebration Sunday, December 6 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. in the hospital's auditorium.
The celebration will feature some of the hospital's founding physicians, many people who were born at the hospital through the years, retired employees, and other local dignitaries.
