Local hospital receives grant for area fitness, nutritional programs

Some local organizations are working together to improve the health of families in the Santa Maria Valley.
The Day of the Farm Worker event took place at the Santa Maria Fairpark on Saturday and Sunday.
It is a celebration for farmers working in the fields, and their families.
During the event, a $44,332 check was presented to Marian Regional Medical Center from the Kohl's Cares® Program.
It's part of the hospital's Healthy for Life Wellness Program where nutrition and physical activity classes will be offered year-round in the Santa Maria and Guadalupe areas.
This is the third and final year the hospital will receive this grant from Kohl's.
Sandra Underwood, the senior community education coordinator for Marian Regional Medical Center, says, "I hope to continue it (the program). Marian might have to pick up some of the slack from the funding that we won't be getting next year, but there's always other grants to apply for, and we're gonna do our best to be able to offer this because nutrition and obesity and physical activity are all things that we need to address in the Santa Maria Valley."
All funds for the grant were collected at Kohl's stores in the Santa Maria area.
