French Hospital Medical Center in San Luis Obispo has been designated as a Blue Distinction Center for cardiac care by Blue Shield of California.

Criteria that must be met to receive this honor are:

-- a minimum of 125 cardiac surgeries a year
-- a highly experienced cardiac team
-- an established acute care inpatient facility
-- full accreditation by the joint commission
-- low overall complication and mortality rates
-- and a comprehensive quality management program.

"It's truly an honor to have been recognized by Blue Shield with this prestigious designation," said FHMC's CEO Alan Iftiniuk. "We've long been known for our outstanding cardiac services and team, and it's gratifying to be acknowledged in this way."

To date, 433 facilities nationwide have received this designation for cardiac care.
