Local military man surprises family at Santa Maria Strawberry Festival

The Santa Maria Valley Strawberry Festival is in full swing, and although it's fun and games for most people, it got a little more serious for one family. A local military hero surprised his family Saturday at the Rockie Lynne Country Concert. Private First Class Robert Tolan is stationed in Fort Hood, Texas, and he was set to deploy to Afghanistan. A few weeks ago, his orders were changed so he decided to surprise his family at the Strawberry Festival. "I did not know. He's supposed to come home in June because he's going to Afghanistan in July, but he's here," said his mom, Cheryl. Tolan says he wanted to surprise his parents because they're always working on surprise homecomings for other families. "They always surprise soldiers, and I wanted to switch around and surprise them, so I thought this was the best way to do it," said Tolan. The festivities continue at the Santa Maria Fairgrounds Sunday. The festival opens at 11 a.m. and closes at 10 p.m.
