The number of homeless children in Santa Barbara County is on the rise.
Federal law defines homeless students as those who lack a "fixed, regular, or adequate nighttime residence. It includes children living in homeless shelters, motels, campgrounds and cars, as well as children living doubled or tripled up.
In 2008-2009, the county identified 2,030 homeless students. Last year, that number more than doubled to 4,122. For the 2010-2011 school year, there are already more than 4500 students identified as homeless.
Santa Maria has the most homeless students at just over 2800. Tonight, we'll take a look at the homeless population in the Santa Maria Bonita School District.
