They're big paws to fill.
One of two K9's with the Santa Barbara County Search and Rescue team is retiring after a decade of service.
Kody is a 12-year-old Australian Shepherd. He's been with the all-volunteer search and rescue team since 2001.
Kody and his handler, Rick Stein, have completed countless missions together. Kody has been successful in tracking down his subjects, both alive and deceased. He also worked with the Mt. Pinos Nordic Ski Patrol and the California Rescue Dog Association.
Stein says it wasn't easy to retire Kody, but that this is the right time. Stein plans on training another pup in about a year. Until then, Search and Rescue will rely on its other K9 member, Blaze.
