Local students compete in poetry competition

High school poets competed Wednesday night to prepare for a national competition.

Jenna Clift, a sophomore at Nipomo High School won the poetry contest by reciting Carl Sandburg's poem, "I am the People, the Mob."

She'll represent San Luis Obispo County in the statewide in Sacramento competition next month.

The state winner will advance to the national competition in Washington, D.C. in March for a chance to get a $20,000 scholarship.

The "Poetry Out Loud" event was sponsored by Arts Obispo. Students from eight Central Coast school participated.
