It's back to school time for some Central Coast students. But what actually goes in to preparing for the big day?

"They come in just with their eyes open, all excited about school, asking questions," said Rosalie Jones.

For Jones, this is her favorite day of the year.

"You never know what to expect. It's a lot of fun. You get to meet their parents the first fifteen minutes or so, and then they're yours. I don't know. You have an audience," added Jones.

Tuesday will kick off her 18th year as a first grade teacher. "It is a love that I have for them," said Jones.

The day before, she made last minute touches on her classroom.

All of the worksheets are stapled and ready to go.

And, those seating cards she made? Well, they're also a tool for her. "By the end of this week, I'll have everyones down. I'm not too good at remembering adult names all the time. But students, I got them," said Jones.

But with this new school year, brings hardships that have been felt for the past couple of years. "Budget cuts. I think every teachers feeling that right now and I just hope our students don't suffer from it," added Jones.

It's something she's had to deal with, and for Rosalie Jones, who was named the Santa Maria Bonita Teacher of the Year for 2012, it's all worth it. "To teach them how to read and how to enjoy reading and writing and just their first experience of school, you know, you want to make it positive and I hope that I do that," said Jones.

The Guadalupe School District started school Monday.

Santa Maria students head back to the classroom Tuesday.

And Thursday is the first day of school for the Lucia Mar Unified School District.
