The governor of Washington is no fan of California wine.
On Monday, Governor Chris Gregoire spoke about a comment she made in Europe, about the wine made right here in California.
When asked about the wine, Gregoire said California wine is "jug wine", and that wine from Washington is "fine wine".
For Brette Womack at Chamisal Vineyards, Governor Gregorie's comments are a little insulting. "Here in California, we're a little bit more welcoming and we love to experience all different types of wines, from all over the world," said Womack.
She enjoys Washington wines. She says they're very different from what she's used to here, but she's a fan.
"If you were to ask anyone, I think it's really difficult to compare the quality of Washington versus California because it's going to be so different. The terrain in Washington is completely different than what we have here," said Womack.
At Baileyana and Tangent, they just want to know what wine Governor Gregorie was talking about. Cheap wine? Expensive wine? They also want to know if she even knows about good wines.
"So saying now a state like, Washington State, is making better wine than we do in California doesn't really make a lot of sense," said Christian Rougenant.
This weekend, Christian will be one of 35 judges at the Pacific Rim Wine Competition in San Bernadino. Wines from all over the world are coming, including Washington; and, he already knows what one of the main topics will be.
But Christian and Brett agree, it's hard to compare California and Washington wines, because they're too different.
The Washington State Wine Commission said that Washington is the second largest wine producer in the U.S.
