A local woman is trying to find a new home for a dog found abandoned outside the Los Osos Ralph's. She says the sad situation shows just how bad the pet overpopulation problem is.

San Luis Obispo resident, Jennie Arambel, says her sister found the older Pit bull mix tied up and abandoned on Sunday. He was wearing a sign that read he needed help. Arambel has been taking care of him, and she even named him "Chico."

Since she already has two dogs, she can't afford to keep him, but finding a new home for him has been difficult. According to Arambel, the County Animal Shelter is full, and she worries Chico would be euthanized there. Woods Humane Society has a waiting list to surrender animals, but it won't take strays.

"Just yesterday, the pound, from what I was told, they had 15 owners that had to surrender their animals, so I mean it's just a hard time for everybody," Arambel said.

Arambel says Chico is a sweet, lovable dog who didn't deserve to be abandoned.

"You need to be financially stable and be able to care for your pet and give it love, discipline, affection, and everything it needs. Most importantly, a home. That's mainly what Chico is looking for is a home," Arambel said.

For now, he is staying in a crate in her car, but she hopes he'll find a permanent home soon.

"I just hope somebody out there is looking for a little, older man that still has energy to walk around. Don't let those grey whiskers fool you. He's still got energy. He's got a lot of life in him," Arambel said.

Chico was microchipped, but a search didn't turn up a registered owner. Shadow's Fund, a rescue center in Lompoc, has offered to help by evaluating Chico's health and behavior. They've also offered to help board him.
