Locals learn about police dogs at "K-9's in the Park"

Some furry heroes received recognition on Saturday.

The Atascadero Police Department held its "K-9's in the Park" event at the Atascadero Lake Park.

The event was held at the same time as Children's Day at the Park. Organizers say they wanted to raise awareness about the valuable services that police K-9's provide in the community.

Guests were able to meet with the dogs and get a first-hand look at how they're trained.

"It's like having your best friend riding in the front seat with you. It takes a bit of time to develop, but the bond is, it's taking your dog to work every day, and it's a great bond," said Corporal John Taylor, the Department's K-9 Coordinator.

The K-9 unit is always in need of donations. To help, just write a check for the Atascadero Police Department K-9 Unit, and drop it off at the police station.
