Both the Santa Maria and Lompoc police departments say they saw gang crime drop last year. They attribute part of that drop to the success of youth programs in getting kids off the streets and out of a gang environment.

Officers also say in a time of budget cuts, this shows the importance of maintaining a gang unit that can focus on gang crime.

Tonight in our Safe Family segment, we'll speak with a former gang member and find out why he thinks gang crime is down in the area.
