The Lompoc High baseball team beat rival Santa Ynez 4-2 on Tuesday in a Los Padres League game to sweep the season series with the Pirates.
The Braves stayed one game back of first place Templeton after the Eagles edged Morro Bay 6-4. Lompoc, Nipomo and Santa Ynez entered the day in a three-way tie for second place, one game back of Templeton.
The Braves took the lead for good with two runs in the second inning against Santa Ynez pitcher Thomas Rowan. Lucas Martin grounded a ball to short stop to drive in Grant Guest to make it 2-1 Lompoc. Keldon Marmaleo drove in Joe Valla with a perfectly executed safety squeeze bunt to make it 3-1.
The Pirates closed to within one run with a run-scoring single from Rowan to score Brooks Fillipin in the fourth inning, but the Braves added an insurance run later in the game when Tyler Ornelas scored on a wild pitch.
Ornelas hit a solo home run for Lompoc's first run of the game. Ornelas and Valla each had two hits for the Braves.
Martin pitched a complete game for the Braves. The lefty allowed just 3 hits, issued 3 walks and struck out 5.
The Braves improved to 14-6 overall and 6-2 in LPL play. The Pirates fell to 5-3 in league and 16-5 overall.
Templeton improved to 14-3 overall and 7-1 in leaguep lay. The Eagles took the lead for good in the fifth inning on a two-run triple by James Ralston. He finished 2 for 4. Michael Frigon collected two hits for the Eagles and scored twice, while Taylor Tobin had a double and a single. Spencer Walsh and Alex Kotheimer each added extra base hits to drive in a run.
Tyler Kollmann threw five innings for the win, striking out eight and allowing just two earned runs. Eagles host the Titans on Friday night at 7pm.
