The Lompoc High football team has high expectations for itself in 2012. Apparently, folks across the state expect a lot from the Braves as well.
The Braves soared into the Top 25 in three major statewide polls on Monday. Lompoc beat defending CIF champion Arroyo Grande 31-0 last Friday to open the season. The two-time defending CIF champs extended their winning streak to 21 games, which according to CalPreps is the second-longest active streak in California. Washington Union, the team that edged Lompoc for the spot in last year's State Bowl Game, has the longest active winning streak at 22 in a row.
This week, the Braves climbed 7 spots to #25 in the Cal-Hi Sports statewide poll. Lompoc is ranked #16 by CalPreps. Head coach Andrew Jones' squad also jumped 11 spots to #16 in the state according to MaxPreps.
Despite all the hype and recognition, coach Jones has his team grounded and programmed never to overlook an opponent.
"Every other team is going to give us their best shot, we know that and coach Jones is always telling us that. We won it back-to-back so we know that we can't take teams for granted," said senior running back Taylor Cornejo, who rushed for 55 yards in the win over Arroyo Grande.
The Braves face Frontier out of Bakersfield this Friday in their home opener.
