Lompoc homeless shelter reopens

The Marks House shelter in Lompoc is set to open its doors again. Money problems forced the shelter to close last week.
The Lompoc shelter, which once housed homeless women and children, will now be a place where homeless families can stay.
Marks House holds 19 beds for needy families. The shelter also offers support services to their residents. These services include in-patient drug and alcohol detoxification, as well as individual counseling sessions for those who need drug and alcohol treatment.
The shelter is also under new management; the Good Samaritan Shelter. The shelter will provide assessments of each individual resident, and will offer referrals to those seeking financial and medical support.
"The community has been amazing. We've had volunteers come out of the woodwork to kind of help us get this place in shape within a one week period of time," said Sylvia Bernard, executive director of Good Samaritan.
Bernard said it takes about $90,000 a year to maintain the shelter.
Marks House is an emergency shelter, which means it's for families that are in crisis. It won't go back to a transitional shelter until Bridgehouse is open again.
As for the future of Bridgehouse, KSBY learned the county is planning on meeting soon to discuss what's next, and that it should be re-open in about a month.
