Lompoc High graduate Chelsea Cassulo's memorable outdoor season ended on Saturday with a sixth place finish in the women's hammer throw at the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Des Moines, Iowa,
Cassulo threw in the second of two flights and advanced to the 8 person final with a top throw of 223 feet, 11 inches. However, she fouled on two of her three throws in the final round and did not move up the standings.
Cassulo was coming off her first Pac-12 Conference individual title, as well as her first NCAA championship. Her top throw of the day was six feet off her personal-best.
Amanda Bingson captured the gold medal with an American record throw of 248 feet, 5 inches. Jeneva McCall finished second with a throw of 242-9, while Amber Campbell earned bronze with a top mark of 239-7. The top three finishers will represent the United States at the World Championships in August in Russia.
