Lompoc High School graduate Chelsea Cassulo was the favorite for the women's hammer throw at the Pac-12 championships. Cassulo, now a senior at Arizona State showed the expectations were warranted by winning the event by nearly six feet.
Cassulo launched the hammer 68 meters (223'1") on her first throw. It was a meet record but six feet shy of her top mark for the season which is also the top throw in the nation this year and eighth best all-time.
It was Cassulo's first Pac-12 title. "It feels amazing. It was a good series. It's a beautiful day. The weather was nice. My family is here and it's nice to be back in California. We're training through this meet so I definitely wasn't looking for big throws but I wanted them" said Cassulo.
Cassulo finished fourth in the hammer throw at the NCAA indoor meet to earn All-America honors. Next up is regionals in Texas and then nationals in Oregon.
Cassulo was the 2008 Lompoc High School athlete of the year.
