Just days after making his college commitment, Lompoc High running back Lavon Coleman got back to business on Monday evening. The senior-to-be and his Lompoc teammates took part in an offseason team practice.
Coleman verbally committed to the University of Washington over the weekend. That is where former Lompoc and Oakland Raiders star Napoleon Kaufman still holds some rushing records.
Lavon, who rushed for more than 2,000 yards and scored 28 total touchdowns last year as a junior, said the Huskies were always his number one choice. "They put in as much effort into me as I wanted to put into a college that I wanted to go to," said Coleman, who added he was happy the recruiting process was over. "They recruited me since day one and always asked my coach when I could check in at times. They never quit on me so why should I go to another school that didn't put in that much work into me," he added.
Coleman had nearly a dozen offers from FBS-level programs like Boise State, Cal and Arizona.
Lompoc head coach Andrew Jones said he fully supported Coleman's decision. "They've got a pro-style scheme. Coach Sarkisian has coached some great Heisman Trophy candidates and Heisman Trophy winners. So I definitely think it's a great fit," said Jones.
Coleman's main focus now is getting ready to lead Lompoc to its third-straight CIF Championship. The Braves went a perfect 14-0 in 2011 and will start the 2012 season riding a 20 game winning streak.
