Lompoc native Duane Solomon, Jr. will try to chase down his first career US Outdoor title on Sunday live on KSBY-TV. The 28 year old runs in the men's 800 meter final at the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Des Moines, Iowa. The final is set to begin at 1:13 pm.
The Cabrillo High graduate won his preliminary heat and finished second in his semifinal heat to qualify for the final. It promises to be a fast final with all eight finalists running times of 1:45.50 or better in the semis.
Solomon finished fourth at the London Olympics and ranks #2 all-time in American history with a personal-best time of 1:42.82.
Solomon's biggest threat is Nicholas Symmonds, who's the reigning five-time champion. "I mean there's always pressure here. The goal is to win. I've never won an outdoor at Nationals. The goal is to take Nick down. Nick is going to be hard to beat and we have a bunch of guys here who are really good. But coming in here, I'm more aggressive out here and I got more confidence," said Solomon, Jr.
Duane finished runner-up at Nationals in 2011 and finished third in 2012.
The top three finishers in the final qualify for Team USA to compete at the World Championships, which will take place in August in Moscow, Russia.
