Lucas Martin pitched a shutout and the Braves' offense scored five runs as the Lompoc High baseball team won its CIF playoff opener on Friday 5-0 over visiting Sultana.
Keldon Marmaleo fueled a three-run two-out rally in the second inning with a basehit up the middle to score Martin, who had singled with one out. Sultana pitcher Marcos Sanchez uncorked a wild pitch with runners at the corners allowing Erik Salas to score from third with a slide. Steven Pico capped the rally with a two-out single up the middle to drive in Marmaleo with the third run of the frame.
The Braves added two runs in the fifth inning on a run-scoring single from Tyler Ornelas and a sacrifice fly from Joe Valla.
Martin finished with a 3-hit shutout and four strikeouts.
The Braves, who finished runners-up in CIF last year, advanced into next Tuesday's second round. Lompoc plays 21-6 Arrowhead Christian.
Santa Ynez High scored twice in the top of the tenth inning to beat La Puente 8-6 in 10 innings in a first round marathon. The Pirates carried a 6-3 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning before the home team tied it 6-6.
Santa Ynez committed four errors that led to four unearned runs.
Ryan Welker doubled in Felipe Gonzales with the go-ahead run in the tenth. Welker later scored on a basehit from Lee Jensen. Jensen led the PIrates with 3 hits, including a solo home run and 3 RBI. Gonzales also clubbed a solo home run.
