Thanks to drawing ten walks and clutch hitting when it counted, the Lompoc High softball team built a 10-0 lead after three innings and cruised in its CIF playoff opener Tuesday. The Braves beat visiting Gladstone 21-1 in a Division 5 Wildcard game.
The Braves scored three in the bottom of the first. Paneeta Richardson led off the inning with a walk and scored on a passed ball. Jocelyn Terrones clubbed a two-run double to score Tawny Nunes and Sierra Lujano.
Lompoc scored five runs in the second inning by virtue of four walks, one hit, one error and one passed ball. Lujano delivered the run-scoring single. The Braves added two more in the third on two-straight walks with the bases loaded. Four consecutive batters drew walks in the inning.
Jasmine Mata-Taylor pitched for Lompoc. She scattered two hits and struck out two in the first four innings of the game. The Braves drew 16 walks in the game at the plate, twelve of them scored.
The Braves improved to 8-15 overall. They play at La Canada, the top seed in Division 5 on Thursday in a first round game.
