LOS ANGELES (AP) - Los Angeles police say a 60-year-old man shot and killed his wife, who was suffering from dementia, and then walked into a convalescent home and killed his sister as she lay in a vegetative state.
Lt. Paul Vernon says the man was arrested Wednesday morning at the Country Villa Sheraton nursing facility in the North Hills area of Los Angeles and a gun was recovered. His name was not immediately released.
Vernon characterized the shootings as apparent mercy killings.
The sister was identified as 58-year-old Lisa Nave.
Vernon says sheriff's deputies found the wife's body in the north county community of Canyon Country after family members who had learned of Nave's killing requested a welfare check on the wife.
