Los Angeles teachers ordered to repay paycheck mistake

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Officials say most of the 35,000 Los Angeles Unified School District employees who were overpaid by nearly $60 million in 2007 because of a faulty payroll system have repaid the excess money or arranged payment plans.
School district attorney Dave Holmquist says two teachers were ordered by the court this month to return about $148,000 in overpayments, although officials have not been able to contact the teachers. Holmquist says others who refuse to pay will also be sued.
The district says about 2,400 former and current employees still owe money and the average amount is under $5,000, but they also say they are still trying to determine how many employees were overpaid. Some were underpaid and some not at all.
Holmquist says those who refuse to repay are stealing dollars needed to save jobs.
