Morro Bay High graduate Matthew Hansen advanced into the Round of 16 with a thrilling extra hole playoff at the California Amateur Championship on Wednesday at La Cumbre Country Club in Santa Barbara.
The UC Davis junior-to-be edged Peter Gibbs of Campbell in the Round of 32 in 19 holes. Hansen fell behind two holes after the first four holes. By the 15th hole, Hansen had taken a two hole lead with three to play. However, Gibbs evened it by taking the 16th and 18th holes to send it to a 19th hole. Hansen birdied the par 4, while Gibbs managed a par to seal the win for Hansen.
The Los Osos native advanced to play Michael Weaver of Fresno in the Round of 16. They tee off at 8:15 pm Thursday.
Santa Barbara natives Jack Perry, Niall Platt and Shane Lebow also advanced to the Round of 16.
Dating back to 1912, the California Amateur is one of the nation's oldest State-Am golf championships. The field starts with 156 players, who play 36 holes of stroke play to determine the 32 player match play field. The quarterfinals and semifinals are on Friday, while the 36-hole final is on Saturday.
