Los Osos golfer Matthew Hansen is about to begin a busy month of August when he'll play in two of the biggest amateur championships in the world. Over the next few weeks, the 19 year old will play in the Canadian and the United States Amateur Championships.
The Morro Bay High graduate is coming off an historic freshman year at UC Davis, where he became the first Aggie to win an NCAA-Division 1 Regional and advanced into the NCAA Division 1 Championships.
First up for Hansen is a trip to Winnipeg for next week's Canadian Amateur, which starts on Thursday.
That will be followed by a trip to Wisconsin for his third straight US Amateur appearance. Last year, Matthew finished 118th out of 312 golfers.
Hansen says he is a much different player this time around, especially after his successful freshman year at UC Davis. "The goal definitely is always to win. Once I won that first tournament, every tournament I go into wanting to win," said Hansen. "Both the Canadian-Am and US-Am would be good tournaments to win because if you do win it, you get into a professional event."
Hansen is the first player in UC Davis program history to qualify for three-straight US Amateur Championships.
