When I was living in the mid-west and people would ask what part of California I was from, sometimes "San Luis Obispo" would only draw a blank stare. "Is that near San Juan Capistrano?" they'd sometimes ask. I'd usually follow up, with "No, we are half-way between San Francisco and Los Angeles." Maybe I'd get a nod, and polite "Oh". But when I'd say "Have you ever heard of the Madonna Inn?", 9 out of 10 times, they had. "Well that's in my hometown." I'd say.

The point is, the Madonna Inn is iconic. It's classic old-style California that has found new life with the retro movement. And according to RoadsideAmerica.com, which catalogs quirky travel sites, it's one of the top ten vintage motels to stay at in America.

It's true, check out the article in USA-Today's travel section. The co-founder of RoadsideAmerica.com, who came up with the top-ten ranking says the Madonna Inn's varied motifs make it special. "They're charming and garish at the same time," Doug Kirby says.
