Mall makeover in the works

The Santa Maria Town Center mall is getting a more than $3 million makeover.

The site of the former Gottchalks store will become the brand new Regal Theatre. More than a year in the making, it is scheduled to open this October.

A mall spokesperson says the addition of the movie theater has piqued the interest of larger retail chains to join the shopping center.

Geared towards attracting more families, the mall will also introduce an indoor batting and soccer facility.

Patrick Corvo, a store manager, says the revamp is long overdue. "(I) grew up here in the late 80s and I've seen the mall really, really busy and then go through a slow stage so I'm really happy to see the Theatre come in," he said.

The mall will also house four new restaurants and a long roster of new retail chains.

The Santa Maria Town Center East will unveil its new additions over the next six months.
