Authorities arrested a man in San Miguel Tuesday night on suspicion of shining a high-intensity green laser into the cabin of a California Highway Patrol helicopter.
The CHP says the helicopter crew first noticed the laser around 10:15 PM on Tuesday and followed it to its source, in the 600 block of 11th Street.
San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to the area and took Emilio Montenegro, 28, into custody.
The CHP says the helicopter crew identified him as the person they had seen operating the laser.
Montenegro faces a felony charge of willfully and maliciously discharging a laser at an occupied aircraft while in flight.
The CHP says temporary blindness, distraction, disorientation, and severe eye injuries can result from laser exposure and pose a severe safety hazard to aviation.
