Man arrested for attempted car theft

A Santa Maria man is arrested after police say he tried to steal a van, but got caught by the owner.
It happened in the 1800 block of South Thornburg just before midnight.
Police say the victim saw 20-year-old Christopher Hernandez trying to steal his car.
When Hernandez saw the victim, he reportedly ran away.
Officers say they found Hernandez at a nearby apartment complex.
He was arrested on various charges including violation of his probation.
