Santa Barbara Police arrested David Peterson, 26, on Saturday, after they say he stole a pickup truck from the McDonald's restaurant on State Street.
The victim told police he left the keys to his new, $38,000 Chevrolet Silverado on the driver's seat of the pickup truck while he went inside the restaurant to order food. He returned approximately four minutes later to find the truck missing.
Police were able to locate the truck with the assistance of GM's OnStar service. It was found abandoned at the end of Windsor Way. Residents in the area told officers they saw a man run away from the truck. Police say they found Peterson crawling through the brush nearby.
Officers say Peterson admitted to stealing the vehicle and discarding $2,000 worth of tools that were in the bed of the truck on West Camino Cielo.
Police recovered the tools and returned them to the owner, along with his truck.
Peterson faces charges of auto theft with a prior conviction, destruction of evidence, and resisting or delaying an officer.
