Man dies after being dragged behind vehicle

BELL, Calif. (AP) - A 32-year-old man is under arrest after authorities say he drove into two men southeast of Los Angeles, injuring one and killing the other after dragging him under the car.

The Sheriff's Department says in a statement that Miguel Penayo was in a crash Sunday with another driver in front of a Starbucks in Bell. A group of men, one of them holding a metal rod, came toward Penayo.

The statement says Penayo drove at them and hit one, leaving him with minor injuries. But the car continued into the Starbucks driveway and hit a man who had just walked out, dragging him for "some distance" before stopping. The victim - 27-year-old Rosshadi Abauwad - was declared dead at the scene.

Deputies reached by phone Sunday did not know whether Penayo has hired an attorney.
