As people ran out of their apartments during a local fire one man ran in and now he's being recognized for his heroic actions.

The city of Atascadero recognized Cal Trans employee Dave Guerena at its meeting Tuesday evening.

Guerena lived at the Bordeaux Apartment Complex in Atascadeo when it caught fire in July of 2012 and saved a woman stuck in a burning unit.

"Anyone of us could be involved in an emergency situation, so you only have two options either you get involved or you don't and if you don't you'll be left with what ifs," said Dave Guerena.

At the time of the rescue he could only get about a foot through the door and only had a fire extinguisher to clear his path.

In the end he saved the woman by reaching in the apartment and yanking her out.
